Fitness Study Links Higher VO2peak to Lower Alzheimer’s Risk

A new prospective analysis from the Generation 100 Study reports that older adults with higher objectively measured cardiorespiratory fitness had lower subsequent Alzheimer’s disease risk. The study followed 1,491 adults aged 70 to 77 who were dementia-free at baseline; 77 developed Alzheimer’s disease over a median 8.7 years of follow-up.

The key signal was baseline VO2peak. Compared with participants categorized as unfit, moderately fit and fit participants had lower adjusted Alzheimer’s risk, while short-term one-year changes in VO2peak showed weaker associations. The authors framed cardiorespiratory fitness as a potential risk-stratification biomarker, not as proof that late-life cardio training alone prevents Alzheimer’s disease.

Why it matters for lifters

Strength athletes often treat cardio as optional, but this paper adds another reason to keep aerobic capacity in the long-term health plan. For lifters, the practical takeaway is not to replace strength training with endurance work; it is to protect a baseline level of conditioning as aging, body weight, blood pressure, recovery, and brain-health risk all start to matter more.

What to watch next

Watch for studies that separate lifelong fitness, genetics, medical history, training changes after age 70, and strength-training status. A cohort association can identify risk patterns, but it cannot tell every lifter exactly how much cardio to do or prove that improving VO2peak later in life will reduce Alzheimer’s risk by itself.
