A new PubMed-indexed study gives a useful reality check for lifters who see coffee framed as a body-composition shortcut. In an older Finnish study population with high habitual coffee intake, researchers found no statistically significant differences in DXA-measured body-composition outcomes across coffee-intake groups.
The cross-sectional analysis included 528 men and women with a mean age of 67.7 years. Coffee intake was estimated with a food-frequency questionnaire, and body composition was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, or DXA. Researchers compared groups drinking less than 375 ml per day, 375 ml per day, or more than 375 ml per day.
After adjustment, the study did not find significant differences for lean mass index, appendicular lean mass index, fat mass index, body mass index, or android/gynoid ratio. In plain terms: in this population, higher coffee intake did not clearly separate people into better or worse body-composition profiles.
Why it matters for lifters
Coffee can still be useful around training because caffeine may improve alertness, perceived energy, and performance for some people. But this paper is a reminder not to confuse a useful pre-workout habit with a direct body-composition intervention.
For strength athletes and physique-focused readers, the bigger levers remain progressive training, protein intake, total calories, sleep, and consistency. Coffee may fit into that routine, but this study does not support treating it as a standalone strategy for gaining lean mass or reducing fat mass.
What to watch next
The study design cannot prove cause and effect, and it focused on older Finnish adults, so the findings may not map perfectly to younger lifters, competitive bodybuilders, or people using caffeine around structured training. Future research that tracks training status, total diet, caffeine timing, and long-term body-composition change would be more useful for athletes.
Readers should also watch the details of their own intake. Coffee with minimal add-ins is very different from high-calorie specialty drinks, and caffeine tolerance, sleep disruption, blood pressure, reflux, anxiety, and medication interactions all matter.
