A new longitudinal analysis from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study reports that a higher triglyceride-glucose index, a marker often used in research as a proxy for insulin resistance, was associated with lower relative handgrip strength in middle-aged and older Chinese adults without chronic diseases.
The study included 2,086 participants and looked at absolute handgrip strength as well as grip strength normalized by body weight or BMI. The key distinction for lifters is that the association appeared for relative grip strength, not absolute grip strength, after adjustment for potential confounders.
Why it matters for lifters
Grip strength is not just a gym number. In aging research, it is often used as a practical marker of broader strength and function. This paper adds to the case that metabolic health and strength should be tracked together, especially for masters athletes, older recreational lifters, and coaches working with clients who are trying to preserve strength while managing body composition.
The findings do not mean a single lab-derived index can diagnose performance risk, and they do not prove that insulin resistance causes weaker grip. They do suggest that strength programming, nutrition, waist management, sleep, and routine medical follow-up may belong in the same conversation for older adults who want to keep training hard.
What to watch next
Future studies should test whether improving insulin sensitivity through exercise, diet, or medical care also improves relative strength over time. For now, lifters should treat this as another reason to monitor trends rather than chase one isolated number.
