Military Activity Study Finds High MVPA in Servicemembers With Obesity

A new BMC Public Health study looked at physical activity in 113 active-duty U.S. servicemembers with overweight or obesity, using both accelerometers and self-reported activity questionnaires. The group averaged about 93 minutes per day of accelerometer-measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and every participant met physical activity guideline levels by accelerometer data.

The finding is a useful reminder for lifters and coaches: body mass index alone does not tell the whole training story. In this sample, participants could be classified with overweight or obesity while still logging substantial daily activity. The study also reported more than five hours per day of sedentary time by accelerometer, and sedentary time was associated with BMI.

Why it matters for lifters

For strength athletes, tactical athletes, and recreational lifters, the practical takeaway is not that activity “solves” body composition. It is that measurement matters. A person can train hard, meet general activity guidelines, and still need individualized work on nutrition, recovery, body composition, occupational stress, sleep, or sedentary time outside workouts.

The study also supports a more careful conversation around heavier athletes. Higher body weight does not automatically mean someone is inactive, and a strong training plan should separate performance, health markers, body composition, and daily movement instead of treating them as the same thing.

What to watch next

This was a relatively small, cross-sectional study, so it cannot prove that sedentary time caused higher BMI or body-fat differences. Future work should track servicemembers over time and look at how resistance training, conditioning, sitting breaks, diet quality, sleep, and job demands interact.

For gym-goers, the next useful question is whether reducing long sitting blocks outside training improves waist measures, recovery, blood-pressure markers, or conditioning without adding excessive fatigue on top of lifting.
