The headline result was nuanced. Advanced methods produced a small overall advantage, with a clearer signal for maximal strength than for muscle growth. Rest-pause training showed a modest hypertrophy advantage in the analysis, while velocity-based training and eccentric overload appeared more tied to strength improvements. Drop sets, tempo-controlled work, and cluster-style protocols generally looked comparable to traditional sets when volume and effort were matched.

For lifters, this is a useful check against program hype. Techniques such as rest-pause sets, velocity tracking, eccentric overload, and clusters can be productive tools, but the review does not support the idea that advanced methods are automatic muscle-building upgrades for everyone.

The practical takeaway is to match the tool to the goal. A lifter chasing maximal strength might benefit from methods that improve heavy-output practice or bar-speed management. A hypertrophy-focused lifter still has to respect the basics: enough hard sets, appropriate proximity to failure, recovery, progression, and consistency.
