A new Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research paper gives coaches and experienced lifters a useful reminder: cluster sets can let an athlete keep more load on the bar during high-volume power-clean work, but the tradeoff is not as simple as “heavier is always faster.”
The study tested 20 strength-trained people in three power-clean protocols: traditional sets of 9 reps at 70 percent of one-rep max, cluster sets of 3 reps with 30 seconds of rest between clusters at 85 percent, and cluster sets of 1 rep with 30 seconds of rest between each rep at 90 percent. Researchers then compared barbell peak velocity and bar-path changes across the sessions.
The traditional protocol produced the highest peak velocity, but it also showed clearer fatigue across the high-volume bout. The cluster protocols used heavier external loads and helped lifters maintain bar velocity and more consistent bar trajectories better across the set, even though overall peak velocity was lower because the bar was heavier.
Why it matters for lifters
For power movements, the quality of each rep matters. A set that looks productive on paper can turn into sloppy volume if bar speed and trajectory fall apart. This study supports the practical idea that short intraset rests can help athletes train heavier power cleans while managing fatigue and technique drift.
The finding is most useful for trained lifters and coaches who already have a reason to program Olympic-lift variations. It does not mean beginners should chase heavier cleans, and it does not prove that cluster sets are automatically better for hypertrophy, fat loss, or injury prevention. It is an acute performance and barbell-kinematics result, not a long-term training-outcome trial.
A practical takeaway is to match the set structure to the target. Traditional sets may keep peak velocity higher at lighter loads, while clusters may make sense when the goal is heavier power-clean exposure with less technique breakdown across repeated reps.
What to watch next
The next question is whether these acute barbell changes translate into better training blocks. Lifters should watch for longer studies comparing cluster and traditional sets on power output, strength gains, technical consistency, soreness, and recovery cost over several weeks.
It would also help to see the same question tested across different lifts and athlete groups. A power clean is highly technical, so results may not map perfectly onto squats, presses, jumps, or bodybuilding-style accessory work.
