A new review compared creatine, beta-alanine, and combined creatine plus beta-alanine supplementation across randomized trials in healthy adult athletes. The authors reported that creatine alone showed the most consistent signal for high-intensity and anaerobic outcomes, including sprint, jump, repeated-sprint, and upper-body muscular endurance measures. Beta-alanine appeared more task-specific, and the combined approach did not show a clear extra benefit beyond creatine by itself.
Why it matters for lifters
Creatine is already one of the better-supported supplements in strength and physique circles, and this review adds useful context for athletes who are stacking products because more feels better. For lifters, the practical read is that creatine may still be the priority supplement for repeated hard efforts and power-oriented work, while beta-alanine is less likely to be a universal add-on for every training goal. The paper also argues against assuming that a combined formula automatically beats a single well-supported ingredient.
What to watch next
The review focused on performance outcomes, not long-term health, muscle gain, or individualized nutrition plans. Future trials that compare men and women, different sports, training ages, dosing strategies, and longer supplementation windows would make the findings more actionable. Lifters should also remember that supplement effects are usually smaller than the basics: progressive training, adequate calories and protein, sleep, and consistent recovery habits.
