Essential Amino Acids May Help Older Women Get More From Resistance Training

A randomized trial suggests resistance training plus essential amino acids may improve muscle fitness markers in healthy older women.

A 12-week randomized trial in healthy women age 65 and older found that combining resistance exercise with essential amino acid intake produced stronger changes in muscle-related outcomes than either approach alone. Participants in the combined group followed moderate-intensity circuit-based resistance training three times per week and took essential amino acids twice daily.

The researchers reported gains in muscle mass and senior fitness test performance, along with a more favorable follistatin-to-myostatin ratio and reductions in several inflammatory markers. The study does not mean amino acids are a shortcut around training, but it does add to the case that nutrition support and progressive lifting may work best as a paired strategy in aging muscle.

Why it matters for lifters

For older lifters, the useful takeaway is not a miracle supplement claim. It is that resistance training remains the anchor, and targeted protein or amino acid support may matter most when the goal is to preserve muscle, improve function, and fight the gradual drop in training responsiveness that can come with age.

Younger bodybuilders should also read this with context: the trial focused on healthy older women, not competitive physique athletes or high-volume lifters. Still, it reinforces a practical principle that applies across training ages: hard lifting and adequate amino acid availability are part of the same recovery equation.

What to watch next

Watch for larger trials that compare whole-food protein patterns, complete protein supplements, and essential amino acid formulas across different age groups, training histories, and baseline protein intakes. The most useful future work will show who benefits enough to justify supplement use, and who can get the same result from a well-planned diet.
