A July 3 PubMed-indexed study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition followed 198 Lebanese military athletes in a controlled four-month nutrition education intervention. Researchers compared an intervention group with a control group and measured nutrition knowledge, eating habits, hydration-related behaviors, body composition, aerobic fitness using a beep test, and strength with one-repetition maximum testing.

The intervention group showed a larger gain in nutrition knowledge, improved eating-habit scores, lower body-fat percentage and waist circumference, and reported more vegetables and yogurt with less sugar and sunflower oil. The authors also reported improvements in aerobic and strength performance in the intervention group. The study supports nutrition education as a practical performance-support tool, but it does not prove that one specific diet pattern or single food caused the performance changes.

Why it matters for lifters

For lifters, the useful takeaway is not a new supplement claim. It is that structured education, repeated assessment, and behavior change can matter alongside programming. Athletes who understand energy intake, protein distribution, hydration, and basic food quality may be better positioned to train consistently, recover, and make informed choices under real-world schedules.

The study also fits a coaching reality: nutrition plans are only useful if athletes understand and follow them. A four-month education block is less flashy than a branded stack, but it may help lifters replace guesswork with repeatable habits, especially in team, military, or high-demand training environments.

What to watch next

Future research should test similar programs in larger and more varied athlete groups, separate which parts of the education program drive the biggest changes, and track whether performance gains persist after active education ends. Stronger designs could also control more tightly for training load, total calories, protein intake, sleep, and coaching contact so the nutrition-education effect is easier to isolate.
