A July 2026 PubMed-listed systematic review and meta-analysis looked at resistance-training studies in adults 60 and older, asking how load, weekly frequency, and intended lifting velocity related to muscle mass, strength, and functional performance. Across 16 eligible studies, resistance training improved muscular fitness versus control conditions. The review’s programming signal was nuanced: submaximal intended velocity appeared more favorable for muscle mass and strength, while maximal intended velocity appeared more favorable for functional performance.
Why it matters for lifters
For older lifters, coaches, and family members helping someone train safely, this pushes against one-size-fits-all programming. Moving every rep as fast as possible may not be the default answer when the goal is building or preserving muscle and strength. Faster intent may still have a role when the goal is real-world function, power, and getting out of chairs or moving with confidence.

This was a review of existing trials, so the next useful step is more head-to-head programming research that tests velocity, load, frequency, and supervision together.
